The National Seminar Theme The national seminar is on the theme of “corporate sector in India: socio-legal issues & challenges”. The corporate sector in India in 21st century is passing through a phase of complete transformation and issues related to corporate governance are taking the centre stage. The envisioned status of India as no.1 in the global economy depends upon the legislative support in the form of corporate legislations apart from other factors. The globalization of Indian corporate sector has also brought the international debate on this subject to the Indian platforms. The introduction of Company Act, 2013 was very significant for the corporate sector to increase the trust in business community. It aims to improve corporate governance, enhance the interest of minority investors, simplify regulation and for the first time provision was made for the whistle blowers. The new Company Act stipulates enhanced self regulations, pro business initiative, e-governance initiatives, corporate social responsibility (CSR), increased accountability of management, protection of minority shareholders, investor protection and activism and better framework for insolvency regulation, institutional structure and number of other provision for the better governance of the companies. For the first time in the new Companies Act, there has been an increasing recognition that the economic activity of a corporation needs to be embedded in societal concerns. In fact, much of the discourse on CSR is conducted in terms of the relationship between business and society, of the moral and ethical imperative of business that goes beyond legal compliance, to contribute positively to society. The changing economic and political shift in the country has demanded that in a few years, it would be time for these emerging economies to go beyond the status quo and emerge as alternative economies globally. The present Central government has announced various programs like “Make in India” and other programs in assistance to special economic zones and other policies for urbanization and industrialization. The state governments are also announcing programs to achieve a rapid economic development & growth for removing regional disparities. The National Seminars will enable a deeper understanding on various issues related to corporate governance and also bringing in the international perspectives.
